Autism Insurance
Autism insurance verification is a part of the process for parents and caregivers who have chosen to work with A Happy Family Behavioral Services. Many parents wonder if their insurance plan includes coverage for ABA therapy.
In California, a state autism insurance law is in place, which requires state-regulated plans to provide meaningful coverage. The law applies to individual plans, as well as fully insured large and small group plans. There are also no caps on insurance coverage for ABA therapy in California.
However, it’s important to examine your insurance plan carefully to ensure that coverage exists for ABA therapy. You can consult the booklet that was given to you when you first enrolled in your insurance plan, which can get confusing with all of the technical language insurance companies use. Below are a few common insurance terms and what they mean.
Network: A network refers to those professionals and providers with contracts with an insurance company. Going outside this network can mean paying a large part or all of the costs for ABA therapy.
Deductible: This is the amount that you must pay for coverage to be applied. Note that you may not have to pay this amount, depending on the service you want coverage for.
Prior authorization: This means that before signing up for any service, you must first get approval from your insurance company to do so.
Copayment/coinsurance: This is the amount you’ll be expected to pay following the payment of a bill by your insurance company.
Out-of-pocket maximum: The maximum yearly amount that you can expect to pay for covered services out-of-pocket. This includes coinsurance, deductibles and copayments, but excludes premiums.
